MOTS-C is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S rRNA region of mitochondrial DNA. First identified by Lee et al. (2015) at the University of Southern California, MOTS-C is recognised as one of only a few known peptides encoded by the mitochondrial genome rather than nuclear DNA. Published research has explored its involvement in the AMPK signalling pathway, cellular glucose uptake mechanisms, and metabolic stress response models. In laboratory assays it has been studied for its effects on folate-methionine cycle intermediates and AICAR accumulation in skeletal muscle cell lines. Supplied as a >99% purity lyophilised powder.
